I recently went to Japan and I was eagerly anticipating my selection for movies. There wasn't much to choose from so I settled on Book of Eli (I knew it was going to be bad but I didn't think it could be THAT bad if it had Denzel), Percy Jackson Lightening Thief (which I've pestered Dennis since it came out in theatres to watch with me), The Young Victoria (I want to buy this movie), the Disney Frog Princess film (which by the way, I discovered that if you pick 'family movies' on air canada, they won't show you any commercials).
On the way back, I watched Daybreakers, Youth in Revolt, From Paris with Love (I can't remember the name but it's got Jonathan Rhys Myers with a really bad american accent), Alice in Wonderland, How to Train a Dragon, and something else but I can't remember so it probably wasn't very good.
Notable stuff I need to get off my chest:
Book of Eli - this is one of those really REALLY bad films. First of all, the villains didn't really have a good reason to be collecting books and as to why in particular they were after the Bible is beyond me. The dialogue was sprinkled with biblical verses used out of context such as "The truth shall set you free". That verse didn't make sense in the scene even if I took off my Christian hat. I guess the ending was clever. Oh Denzel, why did you agree to do this? At least I saw it for "free" but I still feel robbed.
Youth in Revolt was surprisingly funny. You come to a point where you feel like Michael Cera is always playing the skinny awkward boy who can't get a girl but this role works very well for him. It would've worked for Jay Baruchel as I see them as interchangeable. Dennis and I were talking about how everyone's going to think of Canada as being filled with awkward skinny guys. Dennis was laughing out loud in the plane for some parts of the movie.
You can see the trailer here.
Daybreakers is a fun movie. I liked it!!! It's hard for me to say no to vampire films. I felt closure by the end of the film. a few characters make tough decisions, not always the right ones. it's nice to see willem dafoe as a good character, not an evil character.
The Young Victoria - I was skeptical about watching the movie until I watched the trailer and the trailer was so good it almost made me cry...seriously. dennis also admitted that the trailer was really well done but it basically showed the whole movie in 2 minutes. The movie was so good that 9 days later when i finally returned to canada and got internet access..i spent time doing internet research on victoria and albert. Here's the trailer.
From Paris with Love was pretty bad. John Travolta was supposed to come off as a vin dieselesque i play by my own rules agent guy but he seemed like he was trying too hard. jonathan myers should not attempt an american accent ever again. they also did a predictable nod to john travolta's pulp fiction character as he eats a hamburger and declares that he cannot live without a royal with cheese. You can see it coming as someone brings him a brown paper bag and you wait for him to mention it. then you groan (internally, because you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself on the flight).
